Rosh Chodesh | Elul
Elul is the sixth month, mentioned by name in Nehemiah when the walls of Jerusalem were restored. And thus, this is a month associated with God working in the lives of His people even in the midst of difficult times, for their benefit. It was in the month of Elul that the prophet Haggai delivered the command to rebuild the Temple of God. Why was it important to rebuild the temple? Well, for starters Judah had been taken into captivity and by rebuilding the temple it was a physical sign of repentance and forgiveness. Purpose is defined by God; much of the work is carried out by His servants. When God’s people walk in obedience, they reap bountifully. Work is good when it operates within the parameters and instructions given to us by our God. The work for the Kingdom will always be met with resistance, but when it comes to pass (and He is glorified), the reward will always be for our betterment. Before the temple was built, the foundation in which it was built upon was a threshing floor. Grain had to be sifted and separated from the chaff before it could be used for its purpose. Upon the place where the wheat was threshed was where God chose to rest.
