Beware of Strange Fire
In this portion, the importance of preparation and duties are accentuated by the events that happened on the 8th day. The 8th day has almost always symbolized a renewal of sorts, or an initiation of a process started previously — new beginning. We see in Leviticus 10:1-2 what happens when Nadab and Abihu offer “strange fire” before the Lord. They knew what was expected and yet did not take to heart the importance of protocol and holiness. “Strange fire” can render death by causing us to turn aside from the path we are set upon. Doing what is right in our own eyes can lead to our destruction. In a Congregational setting, we also have to consider God’s order and structure. What He is doing HERE may not be what He’s doing over THERE. This portion teaches us that unclean things can infiltrate earthen vessels, corrupt the vessel and makes it unclean. Once these earthen vessels absorb these contaminates, then it must be broken. Our offerings to the Father must be holy and acceptable. We must all encourage one another to live at a higher standard than that of mediocrity.
