Why Do the Wicked Prosper?
At the close of the previous portion, Pharaoh decreed that the Hebrews should fetch their own straw. This was an impossible task, giving him excuse to be even more cruel. As for Moses, he complained because things didn't go the way he expected, and he even told God: “You have not delivered the people at all.” To put it simply, Moses did exactly as God instructed and things got worse. Just like sometimes when we obey God, things worsen and the wicked continue to be more wicked. However, even when it seems like the enemy is winning, the power and "success" of the enemy is an illusion, just like the “power” of Pharaoh’s magicians was an illusion. The deception of the wicked can mislead those whose hearts, like Pharaoh's, are hardened against God, but for the righteous, we must not be disheartened by what is just an illusion. We should be on guard against feelings of defeat and hopelessness when victory or redemption doesn’t occur when or how we think it should. When God says He will do something, we must believe Him, even if we are compelled to fetch our own straw. In time, the folly of those who resist the truth will be made evident to all. Things may seem disheartening now, but hang on to what you know to be true, because the prosperity of the wicked is just an illusion. In the end, all will know that YHVH is God!
