What's In Your Hand?
Seventy souls descended from Jacob went into Egypt, but millions came out, emphasizing that Israel multiplies (and is formed) outside of the Land. After Jacob, his sons, and these original 70 died, Israel began to decline spiritually, which eventually lead them into slavery. But their true slavery came not as a result of living in Egypt, but rather, as a result of Egypt living in them. Soon enough, an adversary (pharaoh) rose up that had no respect for the God of Joseph, and as the story unfolds, we see that his nature is to steal, kill, destroy, and restrain. In their bondage the Israelites began to cry out, and God began to act on their behalf. In response to their cries, He raises up Moses, and demonstrates that He doesn't shy away from who and what we are at the time He calls us. Moses tried to decline the invitation saying he is "slow of tongue,” but who are we to say that we cannot do what God has called us to do? Who are we to point out to Him our deficiencies; our lack of this, that, or the other? God took a man who was slow of speech and considered himself unqualified to shepherd God's people, and took what he had in his hand already and used it for a greater purpose.
