The Sons of Oil
The previous portion focused on the mishkan; this portion focuses on the priests. Garments and unique duties spoke to how they were to represent Israel to God. Also how they were to represent God to Israel. Collectively reminding Israel of her call to holiness, It opens with command regarding the oil for the menorah. Many words in Hebrew that are translated as “pure” — here it is zak. That the oil (fuel for the light) was to be pure in this manner was interpreted to mean that the priesthood was to remain pure, not contaminated by rest of the nation. If we are considered priests, this instruction carries the same weight for us. We are to remain pure and uncontaminated; not an easy task.
