Remove the Veil

Feb 11, 2023    Bill Cloud

This weeks portion takes its name from Moses’ father-in-law, a distinguished outsider but an outsider, nonetheless. Even Jethro observed what God was doing and acknowledged Him above all other gods. It’s also important to note that Passover was the goal of going to Sinai. Sinai was the proving ground; there had to be an encounter that would determine the Israelites destiny. Likewise, without the resurrection, the crucifixion would serve no purpose. This requires faith for us in Yeshua, which in turn leads to liberty. When Paul quotes, “..where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” He was making a point of the story of Moses being veiled. Contrasting seeing the Torah with blinded eyes versus eyes that are opened. When someone sees the Messiah in the Torah, the veil is lifted: the Torah remains. This is about whether we have faith or not. Thus, “perfect liberty is understanding that God has given us a way to live life abundant, through the Messiah. By heeding His statutes and judgements we walk in the Spirit and have a better understanding of our roles as it relates to others and the “outsider”. At Sinai the Covenant was given, which brought all the nations together as a kingdom of priests - the whole nation. They were instructed to teach others and join them to the Almighty - not repel them. These instructions are not meant to impede life but to enhance and ensure life. As believers we are given access to the Father, through Messiah to know His Will and are thus encouraged to draw near. Let us not just pay lip service to our Lord but let us say Hineni and allow the veil to be pulled away so that in doing so we will see him clearly.
